All About Santapietra!

Overview

Santapietra is a lovely mare with a lot of potential and improvement to come. She is by a proven Sire and out of a multiple-winning Mare who won under rules in both France and Ireland in two different disciplines (on the Flat and over Hurdles). She has good conformation, and with the breeding lines and her PTP form (which has since been franked), everything points in the right direction. She is expected to make her debut in a bumper within the next few weeks, so now is the perfect time to get involved!

She finished 2nd (beaten a neck) in her second of two point-to-points on November 12, 2023, at Knockmullen. Not only did she almost win, but she also beat 3rd place by 15 lengths! The winner of the point-to-point, Wednesday Addams, was sold to Ben Case for £55,000 and has since finished 2nd in a Bumper by 2 and 1/2 lengths to the Harry Derham-trained Jasmine Bliss. The third in this Wetherby Bumper finished 16 lengths behind Wednesday Addams, strengthening our belief that we have a very good horse on our hands.

Breeding…In depth

Santapietra is a 5-year-old mare by Flemensfirth, a very high-class Group 1 winner over 10-12f. Notable victories include the G1 Prix Lupin and the Premio Roma for his racing owner, Sheikh Mohammed. Flemensfirth was retired from racing in 1997 and then stood at ‘The Beeches Stud’ for Coolmore as a stallion until he was 28 years old. He then, unfortunately, died in May 2023.

Thoroughbred Daily News: “Known primarily as a sire of top-class jumpers, Flemensfirth's best progeny include G1 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Imperial Commander (Ire), Flemenstar (Ire), Tidal Bay (Ire), Lostintranslation (Ire), Tornado Flyer (Ire), Colreevy (Ire), Relegate (Ire), Total Enjoyment (Ire), and Royal Ascot winner Jennies Jewel (Ire).”

Santapietra is also a first foal out of Pietralunga, a mare who won on the flat turf in France for Adrian Lacombe on July 14, 2017. She was a 27/1 outsider in a 16-runner 2m 1f race, beating the heavy favourite on the day, Daisy Des Ongrais, who went off at 6/4 by 2 and 3/4 lengths. Daisy Des Ongrais went on to win by 8 lengths in a 12-runner race at Argentan (in north-western France) the following October. Following Pietralunga’s win, she was quickly snapped up by Willie Mullins, where she went and won at the first time of asking over hurdles in a 15-runner 2m hurdle at Clonmel on heavy ground, beating Moonlight Escape for Gordon Elliot and Davy Russell, who went on to win in a bumper, over hurdles, and over fences!

I have attached a link to the video of Pietralunga’s win on the flat in France below, as the way she is ridden in hand until late on, making her challenge at the back end of the race resonates with the early reports from the work riders and Lucinda that Santa is a mare who should be a strong stayer in time and one who likes something to chase rather than being a front runner. Pietralunga’s winning performance on the flat demonstrates the stamina in Santa’s pedigree.
